Remembering Michael John…

Although Michael John Lanahan, Jr., left this world at the age of 18, his generous spirit has lived on for more than 30 years through the scholarship fund founded in his name.

The oldest of six children, Michael John was “the type of person everyone could look up to,” according to Mark Monahan (now Dr. Mark Monahan), who was a close friend at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Michael John could always be relied upon to cheer up his friends and teachers, and he was active in several volunteer organizations, including the Key Club. He also ran track and participated in the Spanish and Zoology Clubs.

Michael John loved the outdoors, and he especially loved the water. A skilled sailor, he taught his five younger brothers and sister to sail and waterski. When his bright future was cut short by a tragic boating accident during his senior year at Bishop Kenny, Michael John was planning to study marine biology in college.
